United States Public Service Academy
The United States Public Service Academy is an idea making progress through Congress to provide a free college education to students who will then serve the United States in an unspecified public service capacity for a recommended time of 5 years. The model is proposed to follow the Federal Service Academies already in existance, but with no military obligation. As the WEBSITE indicates, this is a proposal for a college with automatically federally funded tuition, room, and board. Apon graduation, there are allowances for automatic career assistance and priority placement for federal job! There are amazing polls that this program shows great popularity with the 18-24 year old crowd!
The concept was introduced in March of 2007 by Sen Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Sen Arlen Specter (R-PA) in S. 960.
The House followed with H.R. 1671. The "US PUBLIC SERVICE ACADEMY ACT" has 19 Senate co-sponsors and 96 House co-sponsors.
Although the location for this school has not been decided, a strong candidate will be the Walter Reed Army Medical Center/Hospital complex. The proximity to Washington DC makes an interesting point. The $1.15 Billion dollar budget (over the first 10 years) makes the project worthy of bids from cities across the Nation. Kansas has already submitted a bid, and others would be logical to follow.
