This is stated in different ways by ALL the Federal Service Academies, and ALL OF THEM place the Moral Developement in first place. Unlike other college applications, a very important part of the Service Academy process is to explore the moral developement and maturity level of each candidate. This is done through a series of interviews, essays, and background checks.
Each Service Academy has a system to deal with Honor and actions that do not live up to the high standards set by the Professions they represent. There are consequences for "Lying, cheating, and stealing".
A problem experienced by applicants applying to more than one Academy is understanding that each Academy is different. Sometimes when asked about honor, the eager Candidate will often blurt out a response that does not match the Academy in question.
The Sea Services (US Naval Academy (USNA), US Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), and US Coast Guard Academy (USCGA)) have programs that are very similar. There it is called the 'Honor Concept'.
The US Military Academy (USMA) and US Air Force Academy (USAFA) also have programs that are similar. They use the 'Honor Code'.
You will be asked as part of your interview about lying, cheating, and stealing. It is important that you know the code/concept for the Service Academy in question. It is even more important that you understand how it applies to you.
