The Congressional Nomination is the most intimidating and least understood of the requirements for a Service Academy Appointment. It is also one of the most straightforward.
Each Congressman and State Senator, often refered to as Members of Congress (or MOC), can have 5 nominees attending USNA, USMA, USAFA at any one time. As nominees Graduate, it allows another space to open up. For each open space, the MOC can nominate up to 10 candidates.

USCGA has no requirement for a MOC nomination yet, although that is expected to change within the year.
USMMA has a different format, does not accept the Vice Presidetial nomination, and details can be found on the USMMA page...
Usually the exact requirements to earn a Nomination for a Service Academy are posted on each individual MOC website. They are often quite different, so it is important that you research and understand your particular MOC requirements

There are addition ways to get a nomination. There are nominations for children of Veterans, for enlisted actice duty, JROTC, ROTC, and children of Medal of Honor winners to name but a few.
